I can personally see this as a man child in a relationship, but the more interesting interpretation and the one I usually listen to this song with is that of a serial killer. A person that has held a person hostage / captive while using her emotionally and secually, and it is slowly becoming a Stockholm syndrome kind of situation. |

This might not fit the general consensus but I feel like the song sounds really cool when you read it as a toxic relationship between someone and their significant other. They're always arguing, and it gets to a point where some built up hatred is within. And so, he / she goes for the small and petty victories (think, not helping them do x, or "accidentally" forgetting something, intentionally being distant, etc.) which does nothing to mend the relationship. This works really well because of the end of the song. That even if I'm calm and I speak at one constant pitch, you still won't listen to me (hence why I'm resorting to this BS) |

Not read up on the context this song was written in, but this is my personal interpretation: I think it's about oppression. Drought, i.e. drought of freedom caused by oppression, causes the workers (who the workers are is left up to your interpretation) to dream of better days, hence the fields of green. And thus, the workers shovel the last crumbs of generosity. I see this being interpreted in two ways. Either as the generosity the "masters" are giving them. Or, you could read it as the generosity within their hearts, what they're willing to give back, as they're fed up. They start with an open heart and an open mind, which only leads to their oppression and therefore it becomes an open mouth and open vein (open mouth = they're speaking up, open vein = they're bleeding due to it) And lastly, due to the open vein, they're being drained and sucked dry. Someday the rain will come is self explanatory, it's looking forward to a better future. Smaller and smaller is their moral compass. I'm gonna be the smaller man, I'll attack, I'll fight against your oppression against me. And no matter how much you shove me down, I'll always keep coming back, each time smaller and smaller (you could also read it as they're being drained each time, and hence getting smaller, --> Famine) Under your charity is simply how the "masters" try to hide their vile deeds by giving charity, or at least on the surface it seems that way, since depite this they're still crushing the oppressed with it. This is what made sense for me at least |
