The feeling of loneliness and isolation is palpable throughout the song. But the last line - no, the last word - gives hope that someone wants to be with her. I love a sad song, and when I first heard this one I wrapped myself in the gray cloak of its loneliness...until the last phrase: with me. Even now I get choked up at the hope of companionship for her. Finally, finally she doesn't have to be alone. |
