The song has angles. When I was young, this was a song about a boy in love with a girl. As I got older, I realized this can also be a song about a father who loves his daughter. When my dog was beside me while listening, I'd sing to her the line: I don't need to be the king of the world as long as I'm the hero of this little girl Before I got that dog, I used to have periodic suicidal ideations. She quickly cured me of that. After almost 16 years of being inseparable, she passed away this year. Realizing her strength and influence remain strong with me gives this verse a meaning I didn't see before: Now the lights are goin' out Along the boulevard The memories come rushin' back And it makes it pretty hard I got nowhere left to go And no one really cares I don't know what to do... But I'm never givin' up on you! |
