Flastaff in Shakespeare is more than just a cheerful and jolly man. He is that but contrasted against the seriousness of the court in general.

It seems to be that Gord (or someone else) may have sung to the child in the hospital to brighten the mood which was overwhelmingly somber. But it also has the added significance that when Gordon himself sings the song now, he is Falstaff. The song, mournful as it may be, inevitably fails to meet the profound grief it is attempting to express.
