| Tori Amos – Apollo's Frock Lyrics | 3 months ago |

I've always seen this as a song directed to Caton after they parted ways after decades of friendship. Apollo is the god of lyrical poetry & musical performance who wears a laurel wreath. The beginning speaks of a relationship that has lost all it's heart and warmth some time ago. There's a sadness and anger to this song, it's very personal. You and your predators were warned, if the cubs were drawn in... There were rumours about Caton and young fans ( only rumours I'm not saying anything is true) but the cubs could be alluding to that. She feels this person has been riding her coattails for sometime/reaping the fruits of her labours and has now turned on her. But in the end there's only sadness and acceptance they've both lost, the friendship is gone for good. "The soul has been lost of the bow and quiver." Artemis is Apollo's twin and is famous for her bow and arrow. She feels that she's lost someone she thought of as family and has lost an essential part of her without him. Really great song and so sad. |

I've always thought there's something sad about this song. It reminds me of Chocolate Song, which has my only truly hated line in any Tori song -- "no, I need to be more like you." I'm only reading what I'm reading into this, but I've always seen this song as an extension of that lyric from Chocolate Song. It's like someone is telling her to change as a person, to someone completely new, someone more like themself. You knew me as fire You have always been Metal, water, wood Be like Water. You tell me be like water. Is she saying someone wants her to be everything she is not (MWW), and be just like that someone who is already MWW and not be the one this she truly is (Fire)? Be like water. Water and Fire can't exist together. In chinese philosphy - Wood feeds Fire as fuel Fire produces Earth Earth bears Metal Metal collects, filters and purifies Water Water nourishes Wood (water leads to growth of flowers, plants and other changes in nature) Just my thoughts, but it makes me feel sad how her lyrics of late repeatedly narrate a person who has lost confidence in who they are, and is not who they think they ought to be/or are being told to be? |

I really love this song. I feel she is talking to someone who's partner has betrayed them. She's saying it's okay to be alone, the girl will be fine, it can be sensual and empowering to be alone! And happy birthday - your new life is beginning and it's party time because your new life, the next chapter is gonna be amazing |

The lyrics feel like a person who is frustrated with many aspects of her life, and putting a brave face on it. The Violet reference is interesting, after all she used the violets eyes demo here (ah ah ah hey hey hey). It could be a person speaking about having confided to someone their unhappiness with this life & and that person has told her to focus on the positive, hold their head up but given no real help, not really listened to her. I kinda feel the chin up verse is almost sarcastic, as though she's repeating something often told to her. Blondes here don't jump out cakes - life here is not a party (is this real enough for you- this is how it is) "Comply with an Authorithy that would Subsidize my wild side but at this altar was sacrificed" ? Altar as in marriage? Her wild side was iconic in her early career and the record people capitalized it at the time but is she saying she sacrificed a large part of her career with her marriage? Since this follows with "you can laugh a femme fatale in a brides dress/ now married to the effortlessness of the cracks" Almost like people could see this marriage as a joke / "NOW married to..." like this person is now just staying in the marriage because it's the easiest thing to do. When I hear of one more bomb (may not mean a literal bomb, but another example of things blowing up in her life) yes we have all been robbed of song (going back to the at this altar was sacrificed) Nightingales- florence nightingale? Does she mean all the saviours/angels are giving up? |

| Tori Amos – Concertina Lyrics | 3 months ago |

I've always felt this song to be a companion to Lust. I think she's talking about a person who is a little controlling and unpredictable in their moods. It's here I think that we start the many future references to a glass world, and all those references to her changing/being changed. It's like since TVAB her world is fragile to her. "Here in a glass world". Also transparent. And I personally think Concertina could be alluding to a person's wild mood swings, and how that person can embody both ends of the mood spectrum in seconds, a concertina is an instrument that expands and contracts from large to small, opposites, like fierce and calm. That persons thoughts are more important than hers/she thinks about their thoughts before her own (as she runs into "your thought from across the room") that that persons thoughts are always there first in her mind/already there before she's even had her own thoughts. Chinese paper cuts is interesting. Going back to the fragile world.. Chinese paper cuts are thought to promote positive energy in the home if you decorate your home with them. So interesting that "Just another fix" follows this line... all the little fixes you try to make your world better in any way. How I think this is in comparison to Lust again is how it feels the same person talking in both songs, a person who is searching to make sense of their new world and isn't sure how to live through a world they are not in control of anymore. |

For me, I find this song incredibly sad. I feel it tells the story of a woman in a new marriage who is realising the person they married is not the person they fell in love with, and she is questioning how this can be real. It's a sad, and scary song to me. Sifting through the grain of gold - looking for something precious in the marriage. Is he real or a ghost lie - What's happening ? - this person she married, he can't be real - this can't be real Veil tears and rages - marriage (wedding veil) The bride is angry and devastated Until her voices are remembered - she's been silenced in all ways Prays for a prankster and lust in the marriage bed - Again, like the real or ghost lie line - IS HE FOR REAL, IS THIS ALL A JOKE? She prays this is all a joke, she feels tricked (the reality of marriage with this man is not what she thought it would be) and that she just wants him to say, here, I am wife, I was just pranking you, that wasn't really me who's changed so much and left you feeling so cold. And if she has nothing else to cling to, she's saying, well I hope the sex is good anyway (lust in the marriage bed) as if that's all that's left. |

I feel this song is about a woman dissociating herself from sex and men. She'll go through the motions physically but she's left her body and she's watching lifelessly through distant eyes... almost like a voyeur. She's self protecting. She's torn by memories of another man- not good memories. Just breathe/ She's willing... it's like a mantra to help through a panic attack/anxiety in sexual situations. Keep breathing, you are not being forced to to do this. Deep breaths, you are going to be okay. |
