Traumatic experiences when we are young can have deep and profound impacts on a personal and societal level. Callous behaviour and attitudes are created early, repeated when growing up. When someone tries to put themselves out there, be friendly, expose themselves to make connections but are met with constant hostility, neglect, indifference or negativity it creates an animal. Everyone plays a part to some degree how outcasts behave a think. The moral is be kind, don’t be so quick to judge, show empathy. |

I think he is talking to himself. There is a divided self he is at odds with, one has his best
Interests in mind and the other doesn’t. We don’t always make the best choices and we often regret the ones we make or don’t make. He is talking about a relationship that has failed and he has to come to terms with it. “Are you feeling happy?” He has experienced an implosion of self, he was too cowardly, meek and afraid to trust his instincts and go for love and truth. “Dirt shoveled over shoulders”. He has no one to blame but himself. I love this song for it’s vulnerability and I relate it to my own experiences. |

It’s a common interpretation to think that someone else is asking him “are you happy?” But I resonate with the idea that he is asking himself that question. We don’t always act or behave in our own best interest. We hurt ourselves with our choices and the people we decide to be with or leave. We end up devastated emotionally, to blame the other for this is not always going to help you. We have to make some serious introspection, recognize the part you played in the despair you feel. Being mature is realizing your mistakes and accepting them. |
