As a exjw, I need to weigh in. This song is filled with metaphors, but also directly attacks the cult of jw’s and expresses the pain of being an outsider when people you love are inside and all you can do is grieve and hope the pain subsides. Jehovahs Witnesses are only supposed to marry in their faith. I think that he is talking about the pain of falling in love with a Jehovah’s Witness girl in school. She loves him back but she cannot be with him if he doesn’t convert. So she moves on and marries a JW or someone who will become one, leaving the writer/singer broken and confused and ready to do anything to be near her again. If you are a jw dating outside the religion, you would be pulled into an elder’s meeting (insubstantial men) and be questioned and judged about the relationship and what sexual acts you have done with your unbeliever partner (it’s disgusting, really. I was 17 and they asked me if I had an orgasm with him and I was still a virgin) and told that your position in the Kingdom Hall is now on the line and you will end up “marked” or disfellowshipped (shunned). This is quite a common scenario with them. I wish more exjw’s knew about this band. And I wish the singer would talk about his experiences. Listening to them is so cathartic. It’s been years since I’ve first heard this song and it still has the potential to make me start crying. |
