Garth Brooks – The Dance Lyrics 7 months ago
I really heard this song the first time I visited my father’s grave alone. I am the youngest of a very large family and he had been a drunk for 15-20 years before I was born. I was kicked out at 17 simply because my folks decided they didn’t want anyone living with them. (I was a really good kid, always worked after age 13 and got good grades, etc. so I never knew what they told people about why I didn’t live with them). My parents I never had a good relationship, but it was especially strained with my father. We had very few positive interactions, but him being my dad, I still had feelings of loss. And I was grateful for the few good times we had. If we hadn’t survived the worst days, we also would have missed the few good ones. I sat in my car and really cried listening to this song.

I was discussing this song with coworkers and one said it changed how she thought of her father. She said dancing with him at her wedding was so special, despite the strained relationship they had.

He’ll, I had a brother walk me down the aisle at my wedding because I told the old man if he was drinking that day, he wouldn’t walk with me. Of course, he was drunk.
But we had a tiny private wedding and only the best man wasn’t related to either my husband or I. I didn’t even know he tried to make a scene until weeks later.

@[newgirl:53778], exactly. As I replied to another person, I had a friend who married an older man when she was 19. He died unexpectedly after 24 years. She wasn’t the type to do anything like this, but I know many other women who might have.

@[Amanda05:53777] @[Amanda05:53777], I was a little surprised to read how many are like you and think she was almost elderly, or pretty old anyway. I guess because I knew a couple of young widows, one of whom married an older man when she was 19. He survived cancer in their early years together, but died unexpectedly after 24 years of marriage. So she was early 40’s then. She tried keeping his construction company going, but couldn’t do it. She had several guys in their late teens working odd jobs for her. (In this example, she wouldn’t have had “relations” with a young man though because she was a born again Christian. She asked me about 15 years ago if my husband had any friends we could introduce her to, but she had a long list of musts: No smoking, no drinking, must be a BA Christian…I just said, Nope. He didn’t know anyone who met her criteria).
Your suggestion really changes the story for me, so now I need to listen to the song again! 😉

There’s a song from the 70’s that is similar, but it states “She was 31, I was 17. She knew things about love I’d never seen…” It is by Bobby Goldsburo called “Summer (The First Time).
Garth Brooks song made me remember that song.
