Love can be complicated. It can get messy. Many people are creating a back story the song isn't even telling. He's owning up to his mistakes and changing. But that doesn't mean he was a bad guy. People go through things. Emotions can be tricky. Timing can be off. Situations can change. Sometimes, in our best intentions, we make mistakes that hurt our partners, pushing them away. Not to project my own experiences (but isn't that what music is for?), but maybe the author is an anxious person who deeply loves an avoidant partner. Neither was wrong in their own way, but despite the love they shared, that incompatibility eventuality drove a wedge between them.
