I just completed cleaning out my childhood home after it caught fire in Jan. 2025. No easy task. After listening to Suburbs during the clean-up with my dad (something I knew playing was going to be absolutely heart wrenching but seemed to be what I needed then and agree with now) this song is the perfect denouement. I spent 8 weekends in the suburbs away from my life/partner in the city for this crisis and ..damn.. this song says it all for me. Life was confusing/hectic and I went through waves of anger/resentment about all the time I gave/lost.. When I listen to this song, I experience a collapse of events/feelings: all the physical/emotional effort, gratitude, sadness, finally a smile out of recognition of the absurdity of being human and feeling so much all at once. This song is that smile for me - I know what I would've done with that time.. I would've "wasted" it again. And again. And again. The same I might say about my life right at the end, with a smile ❤️ |
