Great song but I feel a lot of the interpretations here are too literal and focus too much on one or possibly two potential relationships described in the verses that are possibly inconsequential. I believe the song is about trying to find your identity and SV really tries to focus on this in the lyrics by emphasising the changing lyric. This song was written by SV in her early twenties in New York. This is a time that is very chaotic, ego-focused and, I imagine, like the chorus seems to suggest, may have ended with a high "body count" for her. I feel the song is sung through the lens of Marlene Dietrich but in the way that a twenty something is trying on a personality and reflecting on her current way of living with this new lens. This song is SV trying on her interpretation of Dietrich like a hat and some of the detached and potentially cynical things she may have said when looking at her own life. It actually ends up being more Buddhist than Dietrich may have been (still alone, why I should be leaving) and, in this way, through trying on this personality starts to reveal something to SV about herself. That's my take! |
