These two comments from decades ago are the only discourse I’ve been able to find on the lyrics of this song. I heard it in the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX video game as a kid but never understood the words. Pretty heavy stuff. It seems like the family was held together by the mother. Mom loved son, and dad loved mom. When she died the father slipped into depression and despair, leaving his son out to dry. Even to the point of disowning him. It sounds like, from the father’s perspective, the son did something to “break the ties.” But based on his coldness in the second verse, perhaps the father gave up too easily, or was even waiting for any excuse to leave him behind. That’s how I read it at least. Could be wrong. Great song. |
