I think it’s too simple to say that this is about wealthy people putting on a front, because everyone puts on a front. Rich or poor, educated or not. As usual with Pete’s songs, he is most likely writing about himself, a very wealthy rockstar, but still searching for the “Real Me”, still wearing a mask, still needing a drink to overcome his insecurities. I think this is more likely a song about someone having an existential crisis. Someone who suddenly sees that they have been putting on a front and not living an authentic life. |
