OK; so far everyone has it wrong. First, the protagonist (Marty Robbins) doesn't murder the young stranger; the young stranger draws first "down went his hand for the gun that he wore"; Marty then draws and kills the young stranger," my challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat, the handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor." Self defense! Second, the posse is after Marty for STEALING A HORSE; "I picked a good one, it looked like it could run"; NOT MURDER. Third, the cowboys weren't behind him. "Off to my RIGHT I see 5 mounted cowboys, off to my LEFT ride a dozen or more". They "ride out to greet him" so to say. He gets shot in the side "...I feel a deep burning pain in my side"; he falls from his horse ..."I am trying to stay in the saddle,... I'm getting weary unable to ride."
Next verse..."I rise where I've fallen, though I am weary, I can't stop to rest;" He gets up and tries to continue to Rosa's. He's now surrounded; and sees..."the white puff of smoke from the rifle."...and feels..."the bullet go deep in my chest." Felina "finds him" and cradles him in her arms and kisses him goodbye. SHE DID NOT SHOOT HIM. If you find and listen to the PREQUEL (Marty Robbins wrote in 1965) to this song; "Felina of El Paso" her life story is told, and the the story is told again; of how Marty and she met and courted; and the gunfight at Rosa's. The story continues with Marty comming back the next day and being shot (for horse theft). SHE DOESN'T SHOOT HIM; however she does pull Marty's revolver from his holster after he's dead, while kneeling over him and shoots herself in the chest, falls across him and dies. @[dreavis:53268] |
