I'm a little confused with the interpretation of this as a love song, it seems like it's quite the opposite of that. Meaning: The singer is witnessing a relationship beginning and is reflecting on his past relationship. He realizes that his relationship is dead but wishes he could go back to the early days as he remembers it fondly. Lyrics: They're playing our song suggests he is at a wedding watching a first dance between a new couple. He thinks back to a past partner who called the song "their song", and asks if they remember. He hopes this new couple will get it right in the ways they were unable to, he hopes he can relive the memories of their relationship before, ultimately it fails again. He reminisces about his former partner and how he considers her the best person he's known, that's why he can't seem to forget her. Almost trying to convince himself that's the reason he's dwelling on the relationship. He talks about how he felt lost until his relationship, and how his partner stirred feelings he didn't know were there. This opening up continued as their relationship bloomed. He believes that his former partner is his soulmate, he hopes that she can overlook his misgivings and love him even still. The chorus talks about how the relationship is truly dead. In his words it's six feet underground. 3 rounds and a sound refers to the military tradition of sending off the person. He talks of flowers blooming from the ground, which represents his fond memories of something long gone. The key part is he wishes they could go back to before she knew him, but she knows him, and how he acts, meaning they can never go back. We go back to reminiscing about the relationship and how he is refusing to give up the idea of how good they were together and how he can't give up on her. We then take a turn. He talks of a fog masking who he is from her, and that the fog was preserving their relationship. However, it has cleared and she knows who he is, someone who never gives up on fights. This indicates he couldn't let things go in the relationship and was ultimately the reason for its end. The chorus repeats with him accepting that the relationship is gone, and that it is his fault, she knows who he is and they cannot go back. He talks again of the relationship being dead and gone but he still cannot put the thought of his past partner out of his mind. |

Overview: Someone is debating leaving their current life to go live as a nomad with no responsibilities. Knowing if they choose not to do it now they never will. Lyrics: Verse 1: The singer wakes and decides that he wants to leave his current life, before those he knows realize he's gone. He plans to go far enough away that he does not have to deal with the consequences of his actions. He daydreams about living like a nomad, staying in barns, and simply doing things to do them, with no motive. Chorus: The chorus indicates the two conflicting ideas. "Hold High, Have Faith, Your Reasons" essentially means believe in yourself and this decision, he's telling himself that he has to leave or he never will. The harmony in the background is his fears and doubts telling him that he's not going to leave "Boy, you'll never get on". Verse 2: He speaks of living like a ghost. He will go from place to place observing but not leaving an imprint. The things he's not interested in he'll simply ignore. Again he speaks of doing things just to do them, and for no other reason. Chorus: Once again he's telling himself to leave and go but is still struggling with doubts. The final chorus indicates he's overcome his doubt as they are no longer speaking to him. He has decided to commit to leaving, instead the harmony sings with him confirming his choice. |

My interpretation: The singer has gone through a devastating, self-inflicted break-up. They have not been able to move on and are wondering whether their partner has. The song culminates with them accepting they have moved on. Song Lyrics The author wakes every day realizing he is no longer with their partner. They are unable to move on and let go of the person they have lost, even as time moves on. They reflect on their relationship, describing their partner as a forest that has been set ablaze, indicating the relationship's volatile nature under the surface. The remnants of the person they are washing away from the singer. The increasing surge of the singer is representing the panic of losing their partner and trying hard but inadvertently pushing them further away. The singer reflects on the fact they did not give enough in the relationship but considers that they would do it differently if given the chance. The final verse is one of panic turning into acceptance. The author regrets that they tried everything to make the relationship work, but maybe they should have just let their partner go. They worry that their partner has moved on while they cannot let go. The lyrics "Are you over me? Are you? Are-? You are." Indicate a final acceptance that their partner has moved on. They decide that they must do the same, but even when trying they cannot get the memories of their partner out of their mind. They haunt their dreams. The final repeats of "Are you over me? Are you? Are-? You are." comes across as a desperate attempt to accept that the relationship is truly over and their partner has moved on. |
