This song is the finale of the whole Hammerheart album, which is about the Christianisation of the Nordic people. I believe this songs follows the end of the story of a veteran who’s life is followed throughout the whole album - starting with his life as a raider in Shores In Flames and his tributes to Thor in Valhalla. We then see the birth of his son in Baptise in Fire and Ice and subsequent raising of his son into a young man in Father to Son. In verse 4, we can sadly assume that the man who confronts the Christians is his son, who is then cut down by them. The people of Asa Bay are then forced to become christian as the old man reflects on his days as a raider seeking glory in foreign lands; and an old crow who could possibly be one of Odin’s two ravens says that this is only the beginning of the Christian Conversion. This whole album is an absolute masterpiece and what i consider to be Quorthon’s best work. Hail Quorthon and Hail the Gods |
