| Jeffrey Lewis – Back When I Was Four Lyrics

A song about the highs and lows of life. There is no overarching theme, no "hopeful" or "dismal" just a highs and lows. I like how it doesn't make too much sense, when he was 106 his grandkid turned 11 but when he's 128 everyone he loved is dead and gone? I like that we can never fully grasp his life, only se glimpses. He lives an obviously very long life, one of his favourite memories of his childhood is the rubber skeletons hung across 9th Street, so when he's old and nearly dead, he goes back there and stares at the rubber skeletons one more time. |

I think this is a guy who tried to suicide by driving of a cliff, or trying to create a car accident. "I thought I told you this world is not for ya" |

I've always booked this song as if the Beach Boys were spooky. I think the most haunting thing about this song is the way the main character is sitting there, taking no action, despite all the "horrible" things that have happened to him (girlfriends saying he abused her, he's got no money, can't sail his yacht etc). Though I do agree that this was meant to be satire in the fact that he's actually having a luxurious time and shouldn't be whining. |

@[elysiarenee:53084] @[janschutz:53085] The "pretended to pray" part is because the main character sees how the church is nice and cozy and goes in there for warmth, but since he's not religious and theres a preacher he gets down on his knees and pretends to pray. |

It's about how societies goal is always to create a life of pleasure, the ultimate goal is to be happy and lazy, but its not that simple. Nothing is, nothing's logical. If we were all smart and content then we'd be robots. |

People hate Smiley Smile for some reason. Yes, it's weird as hell but that's why its great. As for this song, it's about vegetables. |

Quite a brilliant song since you can be doing literally anything and it will always be telling the truth about yourself. IT'S DEFINITELY DAY NOT TALE. If anyone ever interviews John Flansburg ask him what it actually is. |

I think this song is about being stuck in the past. For example, the line "you were here, you were here, you were here" is the woman looking back on her ex-lover, possibly the man of her dreams, who she hurt in some way (I never meant to be the needle that could broke your back), and has now since left her. She's caught up in the hazy memories of them when they were together, and getting back together with this person now is unrealistic, since he's moved on and has a less emotional and more attractive girlfriend (I'm not that hot new chick). As for the "we're onto your same old trick" line, I'm really not sure what that could mean, perhaps it represents the second stage of grief, denial, and she's denying that she's hurting this person, and he's somehow "tricked" her. |

In my opinion, this song is about an older man or woman who was lived a long life full of mistakes and is now going on a fine adventure with an ex-lover. It's my favourite song by the kinks, it feels a bit different to their other songs, it's not hardcore rock like Really Got Me Going or All Day and All of the Night, yet, it's not too alternative rock-y like Lola, it's a tender spot in the middle. I adore this song. |

I personally believe that this song is about religion, and how often in life people are scared of picking the wrong religion or not being religious at all. For example, the repeated line "what's he gonna do?" refers to being sent to either heaven or hell. This is made further apparent by the even more explicit line "so what you gonna take him too?' Other lines that backup this theory are: "heaven or hell" literally signifying ""god's"" choice between heaven or hell, "you got demons in your closet" refers to past demons that still haunt this person, making him belief that he may go to hell. Even the line, "what will you gain, to make your life a little longer?' about the old, scrambling man who's desperately trying to improve himself before he passes on so he can go to "heaven". Overall, I really don't care what this song means because it's great either way! |
