For me, this song is about an abusive lover, absent from his child’s life. Upon his death, the emotions are mixed. Optimistic - wishing they were here to exchange last words even though you are my abuser. Wake up and face me - because in life you never faced any consequences. My perfect enemy - gave me love, child but also dispare, abuse. Who you could have been - knowing mental illness is not their entire identity, but you must draw the line somewhere. Maybe you’re better off this way - you can no longer hurt us or yourself. Passive aggressive bullshit - my feelings. Petty but on the nose. Not Maynard’s meaning, but interpreting art is subjective. Thank you to artists who let us see their pain through our own lens. |
