| Jethro Tull – Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of a New Day) Lyrics | 1 year ago |

It's always fascinating to compare the meaning the writer had in mind and how the listener interprets those words. Originally - a song about climate change from a time before the effects of global warming were understood and the consensus was; the Earth was "overdue" the next Ice Age. I remember reading about the possibility when I was a child. Now I've grown - As someone who has struggled with depression, I hear a description of the feeling of isolation that it can bring, even when surrounded by friends. It also points to one of the reasons, as the pace of change gets ever faster. The world, technology and society all change/evolve far faster than we do. My great grandparents lived very similar lives to those a century before. My grandchildren have a very different childhood to mine. Overall, when I'm down, this song gives me a sense of being understood. Even though, rationally, I know the meaning I hear is far removed from the songs original inspiration. |
