lana references the suspicions that a partner is cheating in this when she says ‘his bonnie on the side’ referencing to bonnie and clyde, showing how the unnamed ‘he’ has a relationship with this girl which is unstoppable, she’s like his ‘partner in crime’. the unnamed bonnie on the side is also the speaker lana is showing in ‘the other woman’, something i dont think a lot of people realise. towards the end of the song lana says, ‘i’m on fire…… he’s got the fire’ showing how the ‘he’ in this scenario sets her metaphorically on fire, not only her feeling captivated by him but also him sabotaging her every time, causing her to feel burning on fire by his cheating on the side, all while loving him.

sweet nothing describes a relationship that feels pure where nothing is expected of you. william bowery, the undercover name at the time for joe alwyn, helped with the writing of this song and also produced the piano tune at the start of the song. this song describes their relationship, and how she always felt comfortable going to him even if the ‘end was coming’ because all he ever wanted was the sweetness of nothing from her.

maroon is about reminiscing in an old relationship, telling the story of how it was emotionally viewed. the relationship is described as ‘so scarlet it was maroon’ referencing to earlier album red where love is described as red, maroon showing how this relationship is much darker and a deeper than how she once perceived love. ‘carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us’ can be a metaphor for how just like carnations can be an imitation of roses, so could their relationship be, realising it wasn’t the love they thought it was. ‘a real fucking legacy to leave’ could mean that the relationship was a legacy to leave behind or alternatively, taylor is moving on and leaving, her leaving the relationship ship being her legacy.

labyrinth is about a fearing how fast a relationship is moving, but can’t help loving them. the relationship being all they needed. this can be seen when taylor says, ‘you know how scared i am of elevators never trust it if it rises fast, it can’t last’, the elevator being a metaphor for the relationship rising and moving too fast, taylor expressing her fear that the relationship may not last.
