He's referring to Thunderbird wine, the cheap, nasty-tasting wine favored by winos. His financial situation is poor because he's a wino; it's as simple as that. He says he took the job handing out handbills in order to "ward off a case of the D.T.s" The D.T.s - short for "delirium tremens," the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. It seems pretty obvious to me, but apparently others were befuddled by it was well. When they perform this song live (there are several YouTube videos of the band doing this song live) He now says "I'm just passing through in search of the ever-elusive Thunderbird wine." | |
