From my point of view I believe it's about a man who cant get over a heartbreak and is athe struggles he faces in his thoughts navigating the stages of greif. There is also a past interview from Tom that I remember points towards this. "The songs more about the heart wrenching pain you feel when your in love" Verse 1 It's important to note he's reminiscing of the heartbreak and the image he has created of her in his head. He's talking to that image he has of her, this image is contradicting as his thoughts remember the positive and negative emotions associated to her. "Hello there the angel in my nightmare" He's In a bad place mentally, managing this heartbreak. He's remembering the good side of her and what she offered him, maybe he was in a bad spot prior and she helped him that's why she's his angel. Maybe there is a hint of sarcasm here as he's remembering back to how things ended. "The shadow in the background of the morgue, the unexpected victom, of darkness in valley" I believe this thought he has relates to himself. He's the victim he's the one that's in/ was in a dark place. Morgues and valleys are dark, would you notice a shadow? "We can live like Jack and Sally if we want Where you can always find me And we'll have Halloween on Christmas And in the night we'll wish this never ends We'll wish this never ends" The promise/ goal/ what he wanted at the time thought passes his mind. Jack and Sally skeleton is something that means alot to him or was something that meant alot to them both. A story about true love. Halloween at Christmas also relates to the story but also shows us there was spontaneous out of the blue plans they had together this is a metaphor for how spontaneous they were. Verse 2 Sometime has passed now and again we find him in his thoughts. "Where are you? And I'm so sorry I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight I need somebody and always This sick strange darkness Comes creeping on so haunting every time And as I stared I counted The webs from all the spiders Catching things and eating their insides" She's not contacted him and he blames himself, he's now on the bargain stage of grief. He's always haunted by his thought of her and what went wrong, he misses her. The bit about spiders is good imagery and show how dark his thoughts are getting and the pain he's in. "Like indecision to call you And hear your voice of treason Will you come home and stop the pain tonight Stop this pain tonight" He wants to call her but he knows it's a bad decision, he feels it's her that should be reaching out to him. "voice of treason" he resents her for betraying what they had but again his thoughts are all over the place they are chaotic and the anger is replaced with desire once again. "Don't waste your time on me You're already the voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you) Don't waste your time on me You're already the voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)" More time has passed he is now in the acceptance stage of grief. With this acceptance of the heartbreak his image of her has changed. "The voice inside my head" He doesn't want her to come back this perception of her is better that how she actually is but parts of her locked away in his mind still misses her. |
