Barenaked Ladies – The Wrong Man Was Convicted Lyrics 9 months ago
I wonder if the "crime" he committed was getting her pregnant and then refusing to marry her. Then some other guy came along that loved her and would love her child without quibbling about it "not being his". Now the woman he thought he could go to whenever he wanted is happily married to the responsible, caring guy. And he knows it's his own doing.

Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics 1 year ago
I always heard this as a parent telling off a teenage girl for picking an inappropriate boyfriend. You know, the kind of parents that are very well-off and shield their children from any knowledge that poverty exists, and then are surprised when their child doesn't know that "we" are better than "them". The girl met some boy her age who didn't have a home, or even warm clothing. He is, after all, said to be standing there in HER poncho and elevator shoes. She felt sorry for him, gave him some of her stuff, and probably thinks she's in love with him. "I know you're a special friend" and "I don't care what you do at home" say that the parents think it's OK to use the lower class for a bit of fun, but you can't be seen in public with someone like that. "They're laughing at me!" And the kid wants to know why it's OK to treat people like her friend badly, why do I have a closet that's bigger than his cardboard box home and has a hundred outfits in it, while he owns one set of clothing and no shoes? Why is he hungry when we have more than we could eat on the table every meal? The parents are used to the status quo and do not like her calling it into question.

Of course, I also heard "Who is that gaucho, Anita?" and thought the girls name was Anita, so what I hear isn't necessarily right.
