The Duplantier brothers had just lost their beloved mother when this was composed. The entire album "Magma" reflects this painful time for them, and this song is an account of the experience. Having also lost my mother to cancer I immediately related to the gist of this song; the feeling of being left in this world to fend for yourself without that rock that was your mother, and to carry on without her as illustrated in the line: “Learn the skill to stay alive, survival The city is so mean, you're being watched Reach the tunnel, light the torch, you're on the hunt Until the light calls you back into the wild” It is the sad and frightening realization we face when the day comes that we lose the person that gave birth to us and brought us into this life, and that idea that a new world appears, and we must now navigate it without them, on the hunt until it is our turn -- "until the light calls you back into the wild." This to me is one of their most profound songs, and it never fails to water my eyes, having walked this path. |
