Neil Young – After the Gold Rush Lyrics 1 year ago
Thought the “chosen ones” were those selected by the draft, then KIA, so they went to their “new home” in glory “the sun.” To me, the whole song was about the Vietnam War, and how devastated to learn of friends/loved ones who had died there, “thinking about what a friend had said, and hoping it was a lie.” The song is of loss and devastation, personally, emotionally, environmentally, civically , “children crying,”… The first verse are the fairy tales we are told from old and still now, the song turns to being (metaphorically) hit in the head with reality, and he is done, “hoping for replacement,” as in please God let this not be real, make reality better than this. They keep sending our drafted off to hell to die in the “silver spaceships.”
