Pink Floyd – Poles Apart Lyrics 5 months ago
i dont know a lot about the band members and the story behind the song, but I interpret these lyrics my way. i had a best friend not too long ago and when i hear this song, i can only think of him and how our friendship ended poorly.

"Why did we tell you then
You were always the golden boy then
And that you¹d never lose that light in your eyes"
he used to believe he was better by himself and he was very confident, because his family would support him no matter how he acted, he believed he was better than anybody who went against his own beliefs.

"Did you know... it was all going to go so wrong for you
And did you see it was all going to be so right for me"
these lyrics are very important, they illustrate how people can be wrong about the decisions they take, the values they believe in. in this case, the person this song is written about was clearly wrong and stubborn, leading to his fall. the way it is written says a lot about the writer's feelings. he did not hate the person this song is directed too, they are sad at the thought that the person they wrote this song for is suffering of their stubbornness.

"Hey you... did you ever realise what you'd become
And did you see that it wasn't only me you were running from"
my old best friend would always compare me to him, and sometimes he would make me feel like my existence was brothering him, because i would always be better than him. he would demonize me a lot but i dont think he did it on purpose, i believe he did it because he had issues within his own mind. the fact that he chose to put all the blame on me only proves that he was unable to admit to himself who he really is.

"The rain fell slow, down on all the roofs of uncertainty
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
And did you know...
I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes"
these last lines are very powerful. they discuss the results of stubborn behavior. without realising, the person becomes stuck in a misery they don't want to leave, because they believe it's better for them. the values they believe in are making them worse. and as time goes on, the ugliness of an unhonest behavior becomes ugliness on the outside. still to this day, when i see my old best friend in the street, i feel terrible about myself and the way he treated me, but also about the way he must feel and the internal struggle he probably went through during our friendship-breakup. what shocks me the most is that he did not change physically, proving that he is stuck in the place he was when we used to be friends

i hope my comment is not too disturbing, it's very personal and i understand if people feel awkward while reading this. and english is not my first language, sorry if some sentences sound weird.

this song is about being let down by your loved ones, that could be your old friends (narcissic people that believe they made you : "Gimme any reason why I'd need you, bitch", meaning they believe youre nothing without them) or even by your own parents/people you looked up too ("My heroes are dead, they died in my head"). obviously the consequences of being treated like shit is feeling like shit : "I'm cold, I'm ugly". and people would deny your emotions, being sensitive would be seen as a flaw : "I'm always confused by everything" being said negatively. at the end, the singer complains about getting his hopes too high and suffering from it : "Why am I so fascinated by Bigger pictures, better things" and "What the hell did I do to deserve all of this?".
i think these last words say a lot. dreamers and usually deceived by reality, but the way it is written in this song is more like a demand for normality and not for a dream. people want what they deserve, and suffering from a bad life of which you don't see the reasons, makes the feeling of injustice ten times worse.

Blur – Advert Lyrics 10 months ago
in my opinion, this song is a big critic of modern society and money's perversions.
the line "It's six o'clock on the dot and I'm half way home" is a reference to people getting overwoked for low income. these people are lured by the illusion of a dream (going on holiday in that case).
you get tired of your work : "You need a holiday somewhere in the sun", people tell you to get holiday, you think about it, but you never do it.
"I need something to remind me that there's something else" the worker needs the illusion to keep going, and this is where the advert steps in.
"You need a holiday somewhere in the sun, With all the people who are waiting" basically this is like a dream where every worker wants to go, i think we can compare it to heaven being the place every christians want to go. so obviously it is very idolised and romanticized. we can consider it the hope that keeps the worker going, that "reminds him that there is something else" than work until 6 oclock. nietzsche said this about hope : "Hope is the worst of evils, because it prolongs man's torment."
the reality is that nobody's going to holiday : "There never seems to be one" i dont really have an explaination for this one. but at the end of the day, you can see(read?) that the only thing the worker needs is something that keeps him going. so why take a break if you can keep going on?
the advert isnt perfect because "If you stare too long you lose your appetite". you get tired of it. you need something else to entertain your mind. so you change you mind and start thinking about this other advert you saw today, etc... you still lose yourself in the illusion, you cannot see the reality. but illusion makes you feel better about yourself, about your useless work, "You need fast relief from aches and stomach pains". so you just fall for the next advert, etc... its easy to fall for it because its "rapid perusation", your overworked mind doesnt need to think but only to see what appears to your mind, you are too tired to really reflect on it anyway... dreaming about it is enough to you, it keeps you going

in conclusion, by selling dream, the advert makes people escape reality and live in a daydream all their life, not valuing their work, thinking they are living the dream when they are only dreaming about the dream. if you think about it, you could say that the worker is "coping" about his poor workchoice and the society that forces it into him lol

like the other songs by blur, the music sounds happy but the lyrics are very deep. this is why i enjoy listening to blur, you can enjoy it both ways and it makes it sooo special

im sorry if my expression is poor, english isnt my first language, and also this is only my interpretation of the lyrics, i could be totally wrong
