| This song and every single song on News of the World are my Favorites!! Bought the vinyl album when it came out and I still have it! Just bought a record player so I can play it and listen to it like I did when I was 13 years old (gonna be 59 y/o this year)and heard the entire album for the first time. I believe this song is about depression and ptsd. I kind of think this because my significant other who had both PTSD and depression from serving in the Marine Corps during Desert Storm actually named his first car Sarah Jane. Also now listening to the words it describes how he was feeling and has felt up until the day he unintentionally, or intentionally decided to take his life in 2023. The lyric, fires are burning in another land. I think in his mind he was thinking of when he was in Desert Storm. And when the lyric, colder and colder the ice is moving closer and it gets me down. I know he was conditioned for heat or hot weather conditions in the Marine Corps, and we are both from Wisconsin where I can get very cold during the winter. And he thought about that often. People with depression and PTSD often have periods of highs and lows and I think that's also described in the lyrics but this is just my opinion of how it seemed for him during the 8 years we were together. City lights are dimming one by one, it cost too much money to keep them all on. I think that means somebody that's overwhelmed and have bills coming in that one cannot afford. I know he was very worried because his military pension, he was told was overpaid to him and they wanted repayment of over $70,000. I believe that was too overwhelming for him and he did what he did because he knew he never could play it back. Then after 7 months he had been gone a letter arrived for him saying that the overpayment was forgiven and he didn't owe anything. But by that time he had already been gone for 7 months and the bottom of the letter said we are sorry if this has caused you any inconvenience. |
