My Interpretation: A cautionary tale rife with strong symbolism and a close-to-real-world 'Satanic'/Daemonic ritual, without going into the weeds enough to cause great harm, but enough to accomplish shock value for the era. It seems to provide an example of Witchcraft being used to cause harm to others, as well as a basic overview of how one might achieve such aims. The goal of the song seems to serve as a warning as to what is out there, as well as explore the Dark Themes of such rituals in an artistic fashion. This would align with the art and how the title of the album is presented, at a glance one might be attracted to WITCHCRAFT- COVEN, yet upon closer inspection the album title is 'Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls'. The lyrics, like the album itself, are evocative and seem almost tantalizing to those interested in darkness, but in reality serves as a stark warning to those who would dabble in the Dark Arts. It also reinforces the listener's understanding that the band Coven knows what they are talking about, and should heed the rest of the album well. In my detailed analysis I will break down core pieces of the lyrics, as well as their esoteric significance, interlaced with personal opinions and touching on esoteric topics that a person interested in these types of lyrics would find useful. First Verse: Numerology "The (Sacred Yin) number 13, used as the number of cultists, is significant in numerology, associated with 'bad luck,' Yin energy, and Dark Magick. From an occult perspective, 13 represents 1 (a point, or individual) and 3 (the Sacred Triad). When summed, 13 becomes 4, a balanced number, but as 1 + 3, it shifts towards Yin or Dark energy. For more on numerology, see Crowley's 'Magick in Theory...' or Pythagoras' Tetractys." This number also alludes to the structure of a summoning circle, potentially containing 6 figures forming a 'Star of David,' 4 in a square, and a Triangle of 3 elders in the center. This structure would be used to BIND [to render powerless yet existing within this dimension to be interacted with] a summoned entity... ( 6 - 4 - 3 ) Or, which is likely the case in this example given the later lyric of the chief in the center and that they were bringing powers of darkness to bear against their enemies, a 5-pointed star reversed to Satan's symbol (inverse pentagram, with the 4 elements suppressing Spirit) with the same inner circles yet a single being as the conduit for the energy in the center for such ritual Magick. So 5 - 4 - 3 - 1, Inverse Pentagram, Square, Triangle, Conduit. Basically, this Coven in Charing Cross knows their stuff. Which is exactly what Coven the band wants both the initiated and laymen alike to see right out the gate of the song. Sacrifice: Next, they describe how the leader of such a Cult violated the one of if not the most Holy & Sacred things on Earth, a human baby with infinite potential still left in its story, being sacrificed for dark deeds before it had any free will. Spawnkilling is considered the lowest of the low in more than just video games. They then 'danced ecstatically,' referencing the Mad God Dionysus and his Cult of ecstasy, while also implying inebriation to dull the senses and Will to make themselves a better conduit for the dark energies. They then imbibed in carnal pleasures of orgy, as a means to attract the attentions and channel the energies of various dark beings of lust, while again further lowering their willpower in the throes of orgasms to be a vessel for such dark energy. Ritual Progression: They then describe how the Demon has indeed arisen, and the ritual became stronger. This part seems self-explanatory, as the ritual progresses and there are noticeable and tangible effects produced within our Corporeal Dimension (3D reality, or "real world"). The next passage, although cryptic, referencing the (numerically) Sacred 7, likey when used in this perverse manner refers to the 7 Demonic Lords who rule over the Seven Deadly Sins or the Seven Planetary Powers. One might be aware of them by their names and pantheon, popularly attributed to Milton's Canon from Paradise Lost. Lucifer = Pride Mammon = Greed Asmodeus = Lust Leviathan = Envy Beelzebub = Gluttony Azazel = Wrath Belphegor = Sloth Them rising from the abyss references the dimension or null Plane from which their power is being channeled and that without us to channel them they are nothing here in our plane. As the abyss is nothing here. But by becoming such fiends, you can summon something beyond the understanding of Academia outside esoteric orders and occulted circles. By becoming Demonic, they summoned one of the 7. Charing Cross: Charing Cross, a significant location in London, is historically and esoterically important. Known for one of the 'Eleanor Crosses' erected in the 13th century by King Edward I, it marks the central point from which distances from London are measured, indicating a 'power cluster' in the area. It is considered the central point by which distances from London are measured, which further insinuates a powerful LeyLine crossing network, as humans innately build along these existing natural power lines as part of their intuitive understanding of Magick-Science. It is also noteworthy for being very near the 'City of London', a known stronghold of the Knights Templar and later powerful banking institutions. The proximity to such a nexus of power adds to the ritual's potency, suggesting strategic use of ley line energies and historical connections to amplify the ritual’s impact. It is plausible that it was the strongest LeyLine cluster near London not under direct control of their adversaries that they could access, but regardless implies a deep understanding of performing ritual Magick upon areas where energy of and around the Earth flows strongly. Consequences and Rule of 3: The next verse describes the outcome of the ritual, where a family of a witch-hunter are all punished and die from this evil spell. This is where I would like to inform the naive reading this of the 'Rule of 3'. When using any Magick, which is simply using willpower to alter reality, any energy you give out or channel for use will be returned to you 3 Fold. If you bring Light and happiness without expectation of anything in return, it shall return 3 fold. If you channel death and dark energy, likewise. For the higher initiates, they are bound by an additional power of 3, making it the rule of 9. Again, Magick can be as simple as rooting for your favorite sports team and all but the most disciplined of monks and zealots are sorcerers in their own right. Although there is no story of what happened to the cult who performed this ritual, you can guarantee their life was miserable, end terrible, and soul Damned during their trial before the Judgment Halls of Osiris. Final Verse and Warning: The next verses are as equally cryptic as the first reference of 7, but further reinforce the Dark Magick Pact's effect, and then the final verse serves as a warning to those who believe basic prayer will save their corporeal form from such powerful ritual Magick. The repetition of the dark mantra at the end again serves to show the listener an example of Ritual Magick in usage, and how repeating certain loaded lines that have deep meaning to channel their willpower aids in the casting of these types of ritual magick spells. Conclusion: There are dark people willing to do depraved things to summon immense power at an unthinkable cost to exert their will. Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power. I tell you this here to reinforce the warning of the band for a new generation. It is likely that you found this song, and these lyrics, because you are either drawn to darkness, or interested in defending against such darkness. To those who would venture to dabble in such dark arts, refer to the Rule of 3 mentioned earlier. Channeling power comes at great risk, and Dark Magick comes at great cost. I would advise you to redirect your energies to more positive endeavors and remember that to extra-dimensional beings a cocky human biting off more than they can chew is the equivalent of the flies who believe they are too fast and too smart to ever be killed that incessantly take unnecessary risks. To those seeking to protect themselves and others from such darkness, remember that temptation lies in power. Be careful not to open doorways and pathways you are not ready for. Yet, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Excellent primers for your own defense and helping others are Dion Fortune's Psychic Self-Defense & Robert Bruce's more recent The Practical Psychic Self-Defense Handbook. ALWAYS - Be careful what you wish for. Remember sloppy spellcasting can lead to great suffering, as Devils love to twist words. If you do dabble, remember this as the ending incantation 'and may this spell do no harm' to prevent mishaps. Also, never forget that all incantation and ritual are merely training wheels for your own manifestation abilities. All is Mental. As Above, So Below. Psychic Consciousness aka Psy.Co |
