| Mandolin Orange – Hey Adam Lyrics | 1 year ago |

I discovered this song a few weeks ago and have listened to it every day because I absolutely adore the fiddle solo. The chords are deeply personal and resonated with a very brotherly feeling. Every time I hear this song, I think about my little brothers. Well, I suddenly awoke to what I think might have been the intention of this song: I think he's singing about gay love. It's all a play on the old Christian argument: it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. So the singer is addressing Adam directly as the symbol of his object of affection. "Hey Adam/Our secret's safe/But I hope the world will learn". When paired with the themes of love and later elaboration..."You may spend a lifetime/And many more by her hand/Reassuring the blind ones/Calling our love sin." That line alone seems pretty clear, when you single it out. The traditional love is a reassurance to the blind ones, a condemnation of the love that the singer and Adam secretly share. "Well I am lying in your shadows but I know you'd rather/Lay by my side." And of course, the unifying theme of love anyway: "Our father loves you always." I don't know hardly anything about Watchhouse, but I do know that their lyrics are often puzzles (The Wolves is another example--a very poetic song that is singing about the Statue of Liberty, I think). Anyway, this interpretation opens many rabbit holes. |
