I always thought the elderly woman was the singer’s estranged mother. The lyric “I’m not my former” I always heard it as “I’m not my father” so he was abandoned by her as a baby or very young child, but he encounters her, unable to imagine she’d ever return. But there she is and he gradually recalls she’s his long lost mother, but she doesn’t seem to recognize him |
