Livinthing76 in the comments here pretty much nails it, I believe. Lynn's bandmate committed suicide by jumping from a building not long before he wrote this song. Jeff states the song is just about love, but it would make sense that he wouldn't want to taint a hit song with the association with suicide. But also, it doesn't need to necessarily be about the thing that inspired the song. I think Lynn wrote the song about love and about life, with the senselessness of the suicide in the background. It could be about love and life, but also involve the metaphor of success, as the band was finally achieving success, and that is very exciting, and his bandmate never got to enjoy it. Livin' Thing works on many levels, and I think that's what Lynn intended. Love, success, life, it is exciting and like riding a wave sometimes. Why throw it all away? Why take a dive? It's a terrible thing to lose. |
