| The song is about a couple breaking up after being stuck in a sad rhythm of their relationship. The line “I saw you from the bottom of the stairs before you knew I was coming” is such a calm way to start the song(I love it so much). It seems very sweet to me and gives me the idea that the person singing this song notices and cares for the other person. “and though nervous and scared, I lingered on”. The person singing knows that they’re about to go into conflict but has accepted that that’s how their relationship is. “I heard most of things break by the ends of these types of nights”, the couple probably fights a lot, but they aren’t blaming each other or themselves for it, they’re just used it. “Since knowing we won’t speak like this again”, they’re breaking the pattern and breaking up. It’s melancholy cause they do care for each other, but don’t wanna keep hurting each other. “You’ve got a certain who knows what about you” The other voice that joins here is the other person in the relationship. The fact that they’re both singing this shows that they’re on the same page about them. I think they’re so used to fighting instead of communicating, that they don’t feel like they truly know each other. On one hand they might be pulled in by the uncertainty of the other person but on the other hand it’s also unstable and feels like the other person is just out of reach. The song title, “I think you were in my profile picture once” also makes it seem that they don’t feel like they really know each other. “And I’ve got a small amount of time to figure out what it is exactly”. Life is short and they don’t want to stay in a relationship just because they’re used to each other. “And to whom does it apply, but I know for a fact that these are broken nights, covered in bottles with the stench of a loss of life” it’s not that they don’t like each other, but they are losing themselves and their lives in this relationship while they aren’t even sure if the other person is the one for them. Ultimately the decision to break up is not based on how they feel for each other, but because they know that they both would be better off if they broke up. “And I know that it’s quite heartbreaking we won’t speak like this again”, most of their relationship probably consisted of fighting, so the loss of their fights are really the biggest thing they’re losing, but even so the person breaking up is saying that they know it’s heartbreaking for the both of them to let go of something they’ve known so well. | |
