Jason Isbell – New South Wales Lyrics 1 year ago
@[bkabbott:50870] Uh, hell-o. The song is most certainly NOT about the colonization of Australia! It IS about a tour of Australia that he did with the late great Justin Townes Earle. It was back in the days of JIs booze and dope addiction (and JTE was if anything worse) and in the song he mentions that the coke was crap and way overpriced and the tequila was so bad that even legendary hell raiser Waylon Jennings wouldn't drink it. It is really a touring dialogue, and of wanting to get back home. But all the shit he and JTE went thru on the tour is redeemed by the last verse "but I swear the land it listened to the stories that we told/God bless the busted boat that brings us back." C'mon man, why in Gods green earth would Jason write a song about colonization of a country 10,000 miles from his Alabama Pines?"

Jason is actually a Hill. He takes on the persona of Lawson for narrative purposes. His great uni (grandmother's brother) was in fact Hollan Hill. All ya gotta do is Google "murder in North Alabama 1982" and the whole story is there. Apparently Hollan Hill was actually the lesser of the two evils. His defense was that Lawson "needed killing" I Guess that was still a legitimate defense back in the 80s in the deep South. Read about it folks, it is quite interesting.
