| While I agree with the basic and obvious meaning, I think there is something else to the song. The lyric and title "behind blue eyes" is talking about someone that may seem attractive, lucky, or privileged. I think it's rather how lucky or privileged a man is and how nobody can relate to his struggles. He is simply the guy who has everything compared to those around him. But behind blue eyes, he's a mess. | |

Obviously, it seems that everyone else is correct about this song being about being in Germany during the Cold War, but I'd like to add my own alternate interpretation! It reminds me of maybe a teenage couple; maybe 17 or 18. They're enjoying life, and really do love each other, and they want to be forever young so they can be around each other forever. The part about the bomb dropping, the praising the leaders, I think it's about the couple growing up and maturing. They realize everything isn't sunshine and rainbows, and that they basically live in a dangerous area if there'd be another World War. They worry about it, and they feel like they've aged into adults while still being there current age they're filled with worry, and they just want to be forever young, without worry. |
