Three Dog Night – Joy To The World Lyrics 1 year ago
This is literally the only song my late wife would sing at karaoke, To this day, I have no idea why.

The first time she did it was at a karaoke place that used the old Pioneer LaserDisc karaoke, so every song had a weird background video. Part of the video for JttW was a man in a frog costume dancing in an amusement park.

I miss you, Christine.

@[kaleidoscopeeyes8:50975] If you're still out there: listen to the original Hoyt Axton version. It's definitely "bars", but...

It's the same thing. Lawyers have to pass "the bar exam". In many countries, they're called "barristers" (not to be confused with "baristas").

@[OHIOgonzaimas:50119] You're pretty close. I'm a Detroiter. I see the "brass" as ammo.

You've all got it so wrong. Chrissie Hynde had been in the UK for like six months when she wrote this, so hadn't absorbed much British slang. She said "If you were from Detroit you would understand the song." She was a native from Ohio, just south of Detroit: we'd be on her news every night. So, here's this Detroit native's interpretation.

> Got brass in pocket

Ammo. In the 70s Detroit was known as "murder city" for setting the US record for shootings.

> Got bottle, I'm gonna use it

Molotov cocktail. This was also the time period where Detroit suffered record-breaking numbers of arson fires. It wasn't unusual to have close to 1,000 fires on Devil's Night in the late 70s/early 80s.

> Intention,

Premeditation

> I feel inventive

(Don't know. But it's scary).

> Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Yep.

> Got motion, restrained emotion

Cold and calculating.

> Been driving, Detroit leaning

That's when you drape the left hand over the wheel and lean inwards. You're not up to anything good.

> Got rhythm, I can't miss a beat

Not sure. Either something to do with Motown music or with shooting.

> Got new skank, it's so reet

Got a woman, she's OK.

> Got something, I'm winking at you

Selling drugs?

> Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Whatever you need, we can get it.
