I rejoined after being gone from here since 2004 after reading some comments. No. Not every song, especially this one is about drugs. I've spent the better part of an hour attempting to comprehend how anyone can take any part of this song and think "ah! Drugs!". Was it the word "apoon"? Sighhhh "Cats in the Cradle" is a term used (and I've attempted to trace where and mostly why)to describe a broken parent-child relationship. Obviously, the father and son in this song have a sad relationship as to wherein the dad is a workaholic and cannot stop for an hour to spend time with their kid. "Silver Spoon/Little Boy Blue/Man on the Moon" are parts of nursery rhymes which are associated with the boys birth, childhood, and in a retrospective way, the boys adulthood. The father recites those pieces of the rhymes to himself as a reminder that the time and life he could have had with his son is long gone, and from now on, there is only hurt feelings, lost chances, what is and should bes. His son, in turn, became a "better" man than the singer did, as the son was there for his kids when they were ill with the flu. Now does this mean that the dad was a bad dad? Honestly, I don't think so. I think the dad thought and felt he was doing the right thing for himself, his wife, son, the whole deal. Much like many people did (some still do), dad probably had a mortgage, bills, college savings, etc. Working so much, in his mind, was needed to provide all of those things. But what he was missing was the important moments in life with his son. His son watched, learned, and grew into his own person. Again, I don't think the dad was a bad guy (and where in the actual deepest pit fo Hell did anyone think the dad touched the boy? Geez, just stop) but dad didn't get the wake up call he needed until it was a little too late. This is a wonderful song, and covered properly, and splendidly. Chapin was a great writer, UKJ was/is a fun band that happened to do an amazing cover of an amazing song. I still remember when this CD first came out, I was super stoked, loved UKJ back in the day. Just please stop thinking every song is about drugs, or weirder shit. |
