I believe this song is about the hopelessness of a meaningless existence. I interpret the line ‘an abyss that laughs at creation’ as a reference to the theory of absurdism by Albert Camus. This theory in short term is the paradox between humans searching for meaning in existence their entire life when in reality there isn’t one. I predict Ian is discussing the point of actually living in a meaningless world, ‘existence, well what does it matter?’ I believe is a question Ian frequently asked himself, why bother to continue living in a meaningless world?. Thus, I believe this song explores the themes of disparity and search for meaning in a meaningless world. Long live Ian |
