Not sure if anyone else has said something similar, but as I was listening to this song on repeat for hours, it occurred to me that the lyrics reflect the lead singer’s experience of being in the music industry. “There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light”… He reveals much about himself through his music (in literal stage lights or figuratively illuminating his vulnerabilities/ hardships/dark side). “There was a dream…” of making music, following his passion. But “the fine print they tell you what’s wrong and what’s right” reflects labels and image and contracts attempting to stifle his creativity, controlling the narrative, etc. He’s frightened by those people (music industry execs) who don’t understand or appreciate how personal his music is to him and his fans, who are the “birds in a cage” he demands to free from the constraints of censorship. |
