Unfortunately, my take on these lyrics could be even darker than one may presume. Many beautiful songs have a deeper and darker meaning. The characteristics of a Miller moth is that it transforms, comes out at night to obtain its treasures or feed, and is drawn to the light. The lyrics reference he is telling his tale, which to me means the Miller is the man in the story. There is alot of reference to a child or someone who is childlike, naive or vulnerable, such as skipping and cartwheels. The use of 'cross as opposed to across may even be reflective of a religious upbringing, which correlates with the use of vestal virgins, usually between 6 and 10 years of age up to 36 to 40. The use of 16 to me means she was probably that age. He had probably been drinking alot with friends, family and acquaintances. He either lured her away from the crowd or she somehow seperated from the crowd and ended up on the beach. She said no to his advances and playing cards meant he weighed his options in that moment. I did cross reference with the original British lyrics which provided more detail. The reference to crash and dive to ocean bed meant he raped her on the beach and possibly, most likely killed her, hence, whiter shade of pale. Sorry for the negative interpretation, but that is mine, and I can feel the pain of the event in the music. One might think this was my pain, but it isn't. This is just what I see when reading the lyrics. Just an opinion among others, to open the mind. |
