In my opinion, this whole album is about a love that is very pure and going well, but then, then The Artist (our main character in the album who we share most of our povs with) possibly sees or hears something that leads him to have a suspicion that his lover, Annabel, whom this song’s point of view is from, is cheating or lying to him. He loves her, but his suspicion drives him to insanity and he develops an alter ego in his mind ( i.e. “the man who took you from me”, “the madman” are some names the artist identifies him with) that he knows killed her. As the album continues, he slowly comes to the realization that he kills her, but many times as he comes to, he goes back to believing it’s “the madman”. Over the album, even as he’s trying to find “ the madman “ he still believes that Annabel had some part in her own murder and grows resentful, like the lyrics proving that he believes it’s her fault, “I handed you a knife and my heart, and now the dream is over” and “how could I be so blind? I guess I fell in love too quickly, but I’m fine” as well. In the end, this song Annabel, it’s about The Artist realizing that, yes, he did killer, but some of it is her fault because she cheated him. Here’s also some evidence that he’s angry at her and blames her for her own murder: - “imagine where you’d be now if you only knew the one you love is the one who’s killing you” (from Annabel) he knows he killed her yes, but he is blaming her for not realizing that something was wrong with him. - “it was your poison kiss that turned me into this” (a lunatics lament) he’s blaming her for his anger because he believes that she was living this sort of double-life, acting like she loved him while still being with another man. - “Annabel, look what you’ve started!” and “you should know I’m dangerous” (from the murderer) once again shows that the artist still has some hatred for ‘what she had done’ (his suspicion of her cheating) and blamed her. |
