I've always been a fan of this song and album. This album is more like folk in some ways than beer drinking country that you expect from DAC. To me this song is about being a young boy and teasing an older woman that's obviously struggling with mental illness. When you're young you'll believe almost anything, we were all extremely gullible once and some still are I suppose. I feel like wild stories had been spread about this woman who probably kept to herself and couldn't defend herself verbally or she didn't even understand that she was being made fun of. Kids love to be cruel and put down anyone (especially those that can't fight back) just for kicks. He and his friends so hurtful things and runoff laughing while Crazy Mary has no idea what's even going on. In their mind she's casting spells and wants to do them harm, while in reality she's doing well to just coexist in a cruel world. The last verse leads you to believe that she had been taken advantage of by men that promised her a monogamous relationship or marriage and then they wronged her. Possibly all of that trauma caused her mental problems and now the sons of those men were teasing her almost like a sick joke coming full circle. A very deep song indeed that really makes you think and that's what I love about music. The meaning isn't always obvious, it's up to the listener to decide and use their imagination. |

Why this song is not more popular is a head scratcher to me. The best relationship advice from a male perspective is basically embedded in this song. Relationships are basically a game of psychology and value. Physical beauty is value, financial prowess is value and so on. You can be a well matched couple, but as a man if you become too predicable, jealous, boring etc. any high value female is gonna hit the road. Women act like they want a great guy to worship the ground they walk on, but that's never the case. You have to keep them guessing, keep showing them that you're a man that's to be desired whether you're chasing financial gain, enlightenment or whatever they want a man that is goal oriented. You quit chasing dreams or trying to better yourself and just want them to lay around and watch TV while the sun goes down she's gonna find another man to chase her. It happens over and over every day to middle class guys I know. Again, it's all about value. Woman love adventure, they love going new places and experiencing something besides folding your laundry and burning your dinner so keep that in mind. For a man with wealth it's the other way around. He'll have women chasing him because he has so much value in their eyes. The whole point of the song is when they've got you where they want you they don't want you anymore and I've felt like that countless times as a young man until I understood the psychological aspect of a relationship. I hope this song and interpretation help you out if you're going through a tough time, I know it always did for me. |

He's looking up to older, wiser men who've experienced a lot of life. While he listens to them ramble about their experiences he's trying to gain some of their wisdom, but he's growing up in an era that's looking for peace (hence the long hair reference) so there's a little conflict going on inside him. Is life all about war and the simple times that grandpa tells you are important or is it what my piers think? I believe every young man struggles with similar conflicts. You want to respect what your father and grandfather have done and you know they're only trying to help you in the long run, but you've got to live for yourself and make your own path. I love this song for that reason, it's real content that young men struggle with and DAC nails it on the head. Not to mention this son is sung beautifully by one of the most underrated vocalists of all time. |
