I think a lot of folks miss the hidden beauty and hope laced delicately into this song. Yes there is a lot of apocalyptic and desolate imagery. But remember when the whole town went dark a lot of people got to working in cold grey rock and we all became brothers and sisters. The verses about resurrecting a past love, he willing paints himself in this past self's remains just to try to live again for his lovers pleasure. There is no distance he is not willing to attempt to cross that desert. The desert is endless and impossible to cross but you will try. The really truth about this song, is we are all supposed to try, even through there is no point. Life will end, we will be forgotten, there is no meaning or point, but if you try you will create meaning and value in the experience of your own life.
