I always took this song as someone trying to help a partner or friend that is struggling with mental health. It feels like a song that shows the other side of that, the person that's giving their whole heart and soul to this person to the point it's impacting their own wellbeing. The song feels like a reflection on how much give and take their relationship has, and how quickly things escalated from a close bond to a therapist. "You're gone and I can tell that I've lost more than you'll ever see" really suggests that they can't see this friend or partner as the person they were anymore, because they're so lost. They feel like if they keep trying, keep pushing for someone that isn't receptive, they'll lose themselves too. "I gave more than I took back, cant help those who don't wanna be helped" really empathises this as well. TLDR: feels like someone finally prioritising themselves after being the only form of comfort for someone who is depressed and refuses professional help. |

I always thought of this song as a song describing being medicated for depression. Doctors watching your reactions to different medications. "I'm at the mercy of unwanted emotions" - having to deal with emotions from depression. "Give me half as much, but twice as fast today" - Changing the measurements and times to take medication. I could go more into it but it really feels like the ups and downs to find the right treatment. |
