I disagree with most part of the commentaries here. People think that is about the band, or really about to join the army, but for me there's a lot of double meanings inside the lyrics. For me this song is about the end of a relationship with a lot of feelings remaining. But the Poetic Persona is tired of everything, it know that have to move on in life, and completly tired of all the people influencing his ex (her friends), so he think in just move the city or join the army to leave the situation. But he is waiting that hopefully the person he is in love with come after him. Slip back out of whack at your best It's a nightmare -> (He tried his best, and even so he failed and the feeling of frustration is here) So I'm joining the army No house phones, but can I still call? Will you wait for me now? -> (He even think in joining the army, as a way to leave the city/situation, and to call her attention. Wandering if she would miss him) We got the right to live, fight to use it Got everything but you can just choose it I won't just be a puppet on a string -> (He's saying that she is just live other person's life, and that she should pursue her dreams. She should try to fight for the relationship as well. He is not letting himself to be controled by other people, and he is going to live his life.) Don't go that way I'll wait for you -> (She is doing a lot of bad choices, but still he loves her and is waiting for her) And I'm tired of all your friends Listenin' at your door -> (Her friends/family are always trying to get envolved in their relationship. And he's tired of it) But I want what's better for you So long, my friend And adversary Oh, but I'll wait for you -> (He wants the best for her, despite what everybody think. So he feels that is time to him to leave the situation. Because he loves her, but they are acting like adversaries now. Still he will wait for her) Get dressed, jump out of bed into a vest Are you okay? -> (He knows that she is not okay, and is saying to her make a stand and get ready for fighting for her life and dreams) I've been all around this town Everybody's singin' the same song for ten years -> (After the breakup, he just don't feel like having motives to stay in the town anymore. He is tired of the place and the people. Maybe he is metioning a mistake or situation about his relationship that everybody keeps bringing back). I'll wait for you Will you wait for me too? -> (Again, he loves her, will wait for her. But have doubts if she will do the same). And they sacrifice their lives And they're lyin' about those odds And they said it a billion times And they'll say it again -> (The people that are trying to keep both away from each other, are lying and they don't have a great relationship with love to give their opinion about other's relationship. So let them talk). So long, my adversary and friend Don't go that way I'll wait for you Well, I'm tired of all your friends Knockin' down your door -> (He is leaving, hoping that she stop with the bad decisions caused by other people influencing her.) Get up in the morning, yelling no more So long, my friend And adversary Oh, I'll be waitin' for you -> (She will wake up one morning and suddenly see that he's not there anymore. He won't fight against her no more. But he waits her to come after him). |
