| I agree with the two other comments. Just wanted to add that Bonnie Dobson wrote the song after watching and being inspired by the 1959 movie On The Beach starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins. | |

I think bbrockme's post is on the right track, except the lyrics were written by Hunter, not Garcia. The "Candyman" is a somewhat common song theme among blues and folk musicians. Hunter wrote his own versions of many folk songs, two that come to mind are Betty and Dupree, Casey Jones and Stagger Lee. There are others... The songs is not about drugs, but it's about a man the ladies like a lot. |

| Led Zeppelin – Custard Pie Lyrics | 2 years ago |

Pie is an old blues reference to a part of the female body, which when natural, the hair is shaped like a slice of pie. The song is sexual, "Put on your night shirt and your morning gown, You know by night I'm gonna shake 'em down" - the singer is saying by night he'll have those clothes off of her. Lyrically, the song is inspired by some old blues songs, a few that come to mind are "Shake Em On Down" by Booker White, "Custard Pie Blues" by Brownie McGee and "I Want Some Of Your Pie" by Blind Boy Fuller. Musically, it's awesome. |
