Daughters – Cheers Pricks Lyrics 2 years ago
it’s fun to see all the old interpretations of these insannneee lyrics. glad other people read into them as much as i did

i used to think the /purgatory/ limbo /the end/ stuff was just stuff lex threw in to look edgy and smart. i actually think the explanation below gives a fairly good explanation for how to view these.

overall i don’t think any specific lines will give you exactly a speicifc cohesive translation that will give a definitve meaning to all the strange phrases and narratives used in this song.

but they do mean something

this song is just the end of hell songs. the past 8 songs introduced us to the “hell” lex depicts, his own life. hyperventilationsystem, providence by gaslight, and fiesty snake woman showed us how unfulfilling and destructive his sexual partners are to him. DSW, X-Ray and Crotch Buffet are all rhetorical, very poetic views of a sleazes (lex) view of his relationship. he’s rhetorically outlining why he deserves to be in this hell.

so these songs describe the hell Lex considers himself to live in, (hell.. songs..!). So what about Cheers Pricks?

Cheers Pricks is the story of Lex’ descent into the hell world created by the previous 8 songs, and a depiction of his own realization of the situation he finds himself in.

I’m gonna break the songs into sections, you all know what they are jsut by listening to it

Section 1: He’s discovering getitng drunk and getting laid. he’s tweaking constnstly, i think a lot of the weird phrases used in this section are referring to amphetamine abuse.

“that boys gonna cry fuckin murder, hanging himself from above these dirty streets”

3rd person viewer commenting on the fact that they’re already aware that lex is too far gone at this point, and this will end up killing him(or leave him wishing he could just die, section 4)

Section 2: he starts to realize he’s stuck in this new way of life and even when he tries to hide or escape from it, it still comes back for him.

section 3: he fully embraces he can’t escape it, and is just succumbing to his fate(note the apathetic and exhausted tone he takes in this situation, lex’s cadence is often very important understanding what he’s trying to evoke)

the guitar passage here signifies in my eyes, the long passage of time

Section 4: he’s been burning in his own hell for a long time and just wants out. this is what he wrote the album about,

“can anyone hear me out there? put me down like a horse with a broken leg” (refer to the album art even!) this is what lex wants to say with hell songs. he can not escape the hell he’s found himself in, and he’s begging for a mercy killing. this section is aptly titled “hell”, as it describes the point that he realizes he exists in the world of the previous 8 songs.

All this said. Why is cheers pricks not the last song on the album? It is literallt called “cheers pricks” and ends with “the end”

well, after depicting his persoanl hell, and begging to be saved from it through a mercy killing, the hedonist side of him that dragged him into hell in the first place gets the final say:

“it’s already too late”

“The fuck whisperer” i think, is what lex calls his “alter ego”, or the hedonistic side of him that dragged him into hell.

I also think the song “the ghost with the most” is about the same thing. that song starts with the chaotic noise of the rest of the album, then transition to this incredibly unsettling, sleazy rant about strange sex acts. thusly, canada songs may follow the same narrative, where the first portion is lex artistic creation, but “the fuck whisperer” is the one in control, and always gets the last say.
