Looking through what everyone else has said, I think that this song's meaning almost changes based on a person and their own problems/things they want to change about themselves. When I first heard this song, I found it very meaningful- my first impression was that it was about someone that frequently starts arguments by saying the wrong thing, things that they frequently don't mean ('I don't know why I instigate/And say what I don't mean'), and that they're tired of always have arguments and fights with people that they have instigated ('I don't want to be the one the battles always choose'). I often do this- I have very little tact, and while I try my best to keep my mouth shut, I often annoy people and start arguments or fights with the things I say. When I read through other people's interpretations, I noticed that many people were connecting it to their own issues and how they have improved their lives by 'breaking the habit' and changing the things they do that negatively impact their lives. Very good song! Kudos to you, Linkin Park. I'm sorry I always get you mixed up with Coldplay. You don't deserve it. |

| I really like this song- love the Indigo Girls and their works. I really like the idea the song gives off, about separating yourself from your upbringing and that you aren't how you're raised, like Ray and the American South. Very powerful idea. | |

| I agree with @[MayaMoo:49412], that it's about murder. Good interpretation! I think it fits a lot better than the song being about lust, though that's not a bad interpretation as well. | |

@[amymonkey:48892] Why do you display a constellation of the southern hemisphere with pride for the American south? Just curious. Or, does southern cross mean something different in America? But I definitely agree that pride for both is not mutually exclusive. |
