The National – Sin-Eaters Lyrics 2 years ago
Wall Street psychopaths recklessly crash our economy, and we (the “miracle ferries”) bail them out again and again against our own best interests. It’s become our chief purpose (“That’s all we do”). We have eloquent complaints about policy and make articulate political forecasts, but contributing to the discourse requires us to participate in and support the very economic system that keeps the vicious cycle intact. Final section is a self-deprecating acknowledgement that he selfishly hopes he’ll be spared from anything too catastrophic (and somehow protected) given his race and social status.

The National – England Lyrics 2 years ago
An ex moves to England, and he’s devastated about it. He imagines that she’s genuinely happy there. In fact, he knows she’s happy. Happy with her life. The climate. The culture. Truly fulfilled. He doesn’t even “think to make corrections” (to delude himself by editing his imagination when he pictures her life in the UK). The chorus is a failed attempt to make to himself feel better; he thinks, “Yeah, well, unfortunately for you—English girls aren’t exactly anything special compared to the hot, shallow, dumb models back here in NY and LA.” And in the final section, he adds that can’t go home because these likely-accurate images will consume his brain, so he stays out all night getting fucking up with friends to keep himself distracted. (Also a quick last-minute jab at the very people who welcome him into their home to party: they’re “desperate to entertain”—to invite/host guests to break the empty, meaningless monotony).
