The Beautiful South – You Keep It All In Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Reiver:48480] I think it's a metaphor and he's not referencing a specific crime. I think the song is about how a husband is thinking keeping his feelings in is a good thing in the grand scheme of things, unlike a murder in 73 and a robbery in 62 which was the result of emotions not being controlled.

Having read through the lyrics and listened to it a couple of times today, I think the the nature of the song is 'be careful what you wish for'.

I see a husband being frequently told that he's emotionally unavailable however the husband believes he's doing the right thing by being so.

"the conversation we had last night"

A reference to an argument.

"When all I wanted to do was knife you in the heart"

The real metaphoric meaning. Husband had extremely strong emotions but bottling them is damage restriction.

"I kept it all in"

By keeping it all in he did less damage and she should be careful what she wishes for.

"That conversation we had last week
When you gagged and bound me up to my seat"

Again, another argument where he's just being lectured to and isn't allowed to get a word in edge ways, ironically by somebody who's emotions are driving their behaviour.

"Just like that murder in '73
Just like that robbery in '62
With all these things that have happened to me
I've kept them all in"

I think he's referencing non descript crimes that were perhaps undertaken because of unchecked and uncontrolled emotions. He's using them as evidence to say sometimes keep your emotions in is the best for everyone because otherwise disastrous things can happen. I think he's also comparing all the arguments and times he's needed to keep his emotions in check to a crime in itself.

I see parallels in real life relationships in this. It's a back and forth between a husband and wife about the virtues of releasing emotions vs restraining them.
