Rush – Distant Early Warning Lyrics 2 years ago
There are so many great insights already, like the threat of nuclear war and pollution, ties to biblical references and Tolkien, and of course, the looming threat to the object of love in the song (whether metaphorical of physical). One reference I did not see that anyone has pointed out was the "cities of the plain". On the surface this could be a throwaway lyric, or a reference to America's heartland and Great Plains. But I also believe that when writing the lyrics with as much craft as Peart exercised, the reference that ties in for me is to the biblical cities of the plain (two of which were Sodom and Gamora) that are wiped out in a cataclysmic event. I'm not overly religious, but the lost history seems like a good reference and also adds something to the interpretation of the song.
